Cancer patients are in need of more effective and safer therapies. Scientific advances occurring within pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and academic laboratories are beginning to allow for the targeting of the critical biochemical and metabolic pathways associated with cancer. In addition, co-development of drugs with correlative diagnostic tools may facilitate the targeting of defined patient populations, thereby imparting the greatest benefit to patients. Unfortunately an abundance of promising drug candidates based upon these scientific advances are unable to advance because of inadequate resources.
